Causes for anaemia

Anaemia Menu

There are many different causes of anaemia. The most common cause is iron deficiency because of an inadequate diet. Iron deficiency is more common in premature babies. It also occurs in a teenage girls who has just started her periods.

Other causes of anaemia include:

  • Abnormal production of hemoglobin: sickle cell disease, thalassaemia.
  • Breakdown of blood: inherited defects of the red blood cells, autoimmune hemolytic anaemia.
  • Internal bleeding, for example if you have an ulcer or a tumor .
  • The person is already suffering from blood diseases such as leukemia.
  • A diminished formation of red blood cells in the bone marrow, either due to defects in the bone marrow, or due to an inadequate intake of iron, vitamins (mainly Vitamin B12 and Folic Acid), and proteins, is one more main causes of anaemia.
  • Person is already suffering from infections, such as malaria.
  • Bleeding from the guts (intestines) - In some conditions the guts can bleed enough to cause anaemia.
  • Heavy loss of blood due to injury, bleeding piles - Due to this heavy blood loss, it may lead to anaemia.
  • Heavy Menstrual Periods - The amount of iron that you eat may not be enough to replace the amount that usually lose while bleeding each month. So, start increasing your iron intake.
