Anorexia - What is Anorexia?
DefinitionAnorexia: An eating disorder characterized by noticeably reduced appetite or total aversion to food. Anorexia is a serious psychological disorder. The person with anorexia, most often a girl or young woman, initially starts losing weight. Over time, the weight loss becomes a sign of mastery and control. Anorexia can be life-threatening. It is usually characterized by abnormal fear of becoming obese, a distorted self-image, a persistent unwillingness to eat, and severe weight loss. Anorexia nervosa is a psychiatric diagnosis that describes an eating disorder characterized by low body weight and body image distortion. Individuals with anorexia often control body weight by voluntary starvation , purging, vomiting , excessive exercise. Anorexia generally affects females, but can affect males as well. And while anorexia typically begins to manifest itself during early adolescence, it is also seen in young children and adult.
