Signs and Symptoms of Boils

Alternative Name: Furuncle

Boils Menu

A carbuncle is a cluster of boils that often occurs on the back of the neck, shoulders or thighs, especially in older men. Carbuncles cause a deeper and more severe infection than a single boil. They also develop and heal more slowly and are likely to leave a scar.

Whenever you have a boil or a carbuncle, you also can have a fever and feel generally sick. A fever is more likely with a carbuncle than with a single boil.

Boils tend to get larger and more painful over a few days, before bursting and releasing the pus. This usually eases the pain, although a small scar may be left at the site of the boil.

Some important symptoms of boils are:

  • Itching.
  • Localized swelling.
  • Tenderness and pain.
  • The skin around the boil becomes red and boil is filled with pus.
  • Fever and swelling of the lymph glands.
  • Fluctuant nodule.
  • Usually the boils are pea sized, but may be as large as a golf ball.
  • Increasing pain as pus and dead tissue fills the area.
  • Decreasing pain as the area drains.
  • Fever.
  • Fatigue.
  • General Discomfort.
  • Whitish, bloody discharge from the boil.
