Causes of Depression

The three most important causes of depression are biological , genetic , and environmental factors.

  • Biological Causes: They are due to changes in the chemistry of the brain , such as fluctuations in the levels of important hormones.
  • Genetic Causes: Genetical Causes are the result of what you inherit from your parents. If one or both of the parents have had a vulnerability to depression, then it may be be transmitted to the offspring's.
  • Environmental Causes: Environmental factors result from stressful emotional situations, such as a lack of loving parents or the death of a parent during childhood. Environmental factors also include the emotional instability.

Other possible causes of depression may be:

Gender: Women's are usually more likely to get affected by depression. Among children, depression appears to occur in equal numbers of girls and boys.

Thinking: Depression may be caused by certain style of thinking (thinking a lot on a very small thing which may have hurt you).

Age: The persons between the age of 20 and 50, are more likely to get affected by depression.

Previous episode: Depression may be the result of unfortunate experience. If you have had major depression once before, your chances of developing it again increase.
