Causes of Diabetes Mellitus
The deficiency of insulin hormone or its receptors plays a vital role in causing most of the forms of diabetes mellitus.
There are many risk factors for diabetes, including:
- A parent, brother, or sister already suffering from diabetes.
- High blood levels of triglycerides (a type of fat molecule), may lead to diabetes.
- High blood cholesterol level.
- Some diseases of the pancreas, may reduce the production of insulin hormone and ultimately leading to diabetes mellitus.
- Hormonal defects.
- Chemicals or drugs.
- Obesity: Obesity is found in approximately 85% of patients diagnosed with type 2 diabetes.
- Hypertension: Hypertension is another main cause of diabetes.
- Age: Usually persons above age of 45 years are susceptible to diabetes mellitus.
- Food: What and how much you eat, and the time of day at which you eat, also affect your blood sugar level.
- Exercise and Physical Activity: Physical activity causes sugar to be transported to your cells, where it's used for energy, thereby lowering the levels in your blood. Aerobic exercises such as brisk walking, jogging or biking are especially good. But gardening, housework can lower your blood sugar.
- Alcohol: It is the main cause of diabetes mellitus. A person already susceptible to diabetes mellitus, should never drink alcohol, its a type of poison for him
- Fluctuations in hormone levels: The female hormone estrogen makes cells more responsive to insulin, while on the other hand progesterone makes cells resistant to insulin. Although these two hormones fluctuate throughout the menstrual cycle, thus can causes diabetes mellitus.
