Gallstones Introduction and How are they Formed?
Definiton:Gallstone is a common digestive disorder. Most of the people across the world suffer from this disorder. Women are more prone towards this disorder than men because of pregnancies, sudden weight loss and obesity. How Gallstones are formed? The main function of gall bladder is the storage of bile produced by the liver. It also plays a vital role in digestion of food and also helps the small intestine in absorption of fats. Gallstones are generally constituted from bile salts and cholesterol. A study shows that most of the gallstones are formed because of over secretion of cholesterol by liver which is abnormally saturated with bile. The abundance of cholesterol results in the formation of stones that gets stored in the gall bladder. Cholesterol bile stones are generally yellowish green in color while gallstones that occur because of bile salts are dark in color. Gallstones can also formed because of declination in the levels of bile lecithin and bile acids. The size of the gallstones varies from person to person. It can be as small as a piece of grain and for maximum it can be like a golf ball size .Mainly Gallstones occur at age of forty but in today's environment these can occur in young age also because of the trend of fast foods. Beside nutritional factors, genetical factors are also responsible for the formation of gall stones. According to a study 8 to 10 types of genes are responsible for the occurrence of gallstones. The Gallstones can affect flow of bile very badly by obstructing its path in any of the ducts that acts as a medium for flow of bile from liver to intestine. These ducts include: Hepatic ducts whose function is to help in flow of bile outside the liver. Cystic duct which plays a vital role in the entry and exit of bile from gall bladder. Common bile duct whose task is to flow bile towards intestine.
