Causes for Goitre

Goitre Menu

Goitre can be Caused by a range of factors, including:

  • Goitres may also result from a reduced amount of iodide in the diet. Large quantities of iodide have an inhibitory effect on the thyroid.
  • High consumption of certain foods that neutralize iodine, such as cabbage, broccoli and cauliflower can easily lead to formation of goitre, as goitre is mainly caused due to iodine deficiency. Other foods, like soy, may also cause goitres.
  • Certain drugs, such as lithium and phenylbutazone - can also cause goitre as a side effect.
  • Goitre can also be caused by benign or malignant tumors. Cancer of the thyroid is a very rare cause.
  • Hyperthyroidism: Hyperthyroidism means the thyroid gland is overactive. A common cause is Graves' disease, in which the immune system produces antibodies that act like TSH and stimulate the thyroid gland uncontrollably.
  • Hypothyroidism: Hypothyroidism means the thyroid gland is under active.
  • Congenital enzyme defect in thyroxine synthesis.
