Causes of High Blood Pressure

In most cases, the causes of high blood pressure are usually not known. However, some things may increase your risk of developing high blood pressure disease. Some of them include:
- Sleep Apnoea: This is characterized by loud snoring, which may be followed by apnoea (no breathing) and then gasping or snorting. The changes and stress this puts on the body may lead to high blood pressure.
- Use of oestrogen-based contraceptive pills and hormone replacement therapy has been implicated as a cause.
- Obesity: People who are overweight have a greater chance of developing high blood pressure disease.
- Oral Contraceptives: Women who take the pill have more chances to get affected by high blood pressure. The chance of developing high blood pressure increases, if they also smoke.
- Excessive Alcohol use: Drinking excessive amounts of alcohol can increase the risk of developing high blood pressure.
- Too much Dietary Salt: Use of excessive salt in the diet can increase blood pressure.
- A structural abnormality of the aorta (large blood vessel leaving the heart) may increase the high blood pressure.
- Narrowing of certain arteries may also lead to high blood pressure.
- Gender: High blood pressure is more common in men than in women till age of 55. However, over age of 75 years, women are more likely to suffer from high blood pressure condition.
- Race: African Americans have high blood pressure more often and more severely than whites.
- Other Diseases : If a person is suffering from chronic kidney disease, he or she may have the chances to get affect very easily.
