Causes for Hives (Urticaria)

Some important Causes of Hives includes:

  • Ingestion or Inhalation: In most cases urticaria are caused by ingestion or inhalation of a substance.
  • Many foods or food additives can also cause hives. These includes: Fish, Shellfish, Excessive eating of Nuts, Eggs or Chocolate may also sometimes cause hives.
  • Hives Caused by Diseases or Infection: Certain diseases also cause hives (urticaria) as a symptom of the disease. Some of the Diseases are - Mastocytosis, Lupus (SLE), Rheumatic fever etc.
  • The environmental factors that may produce an onset of hives are exposure to pollen, house-dust, animal dander, fungi, plants and extreme temperature changes.
  • Emotional and Psychological Factors - These factors play a vital role in making a person more susceptible to hives.
  • Frequent bacterial or viral infections in the throat, teeth, sinuses, chest, ears, joints, as well as gallbladder can also lead to cause of urticaria. Insect bites or even worm infestation, such as round worms are also known causes.
  • Some synthetic products such as deodorant, perfume, talcum powder, or cosmetics also sometimes induce hives.

  • Infections like mononucleosis or illness.
  • Emotional stress.
  • Extreme cold or sun exposure.
  • Excessive perspiration.
