Hives (Urticaria) - Introduction
Definition:It is an allergic reaction in the skin with a lot of itching and swellings. Hives can happen in any area of your skin from the head to the toes. When the reaction is limited to small areas of the skin, it is called "urticaria. Urticaria is also known as nettle rash or uredo. Involvement of larger areas, such as whole sections of a limb, is called "angioedema. Hives can occur anywhere on the body and can also vary in size and shape. They can be small like a mosquito bite or in some cases may enlarge as big as a dinner plate. Hives are small, red swellings on the skin, occurring singularly or in clusters. Hives usually appear in the form of one or more raised light red patches called wheals. Hives can also be caused by stress.
