Kidney Stones
Definition:Kidney stones, also known as nephrolithiasis, urolithiasis or renal calculi, are the result of crystallization of certain substances found in urine, including calcium, phosphate, oxalic acid, and uric acid, calcium oxalate, ammonium phosphate, cystine and other substances (such as calcium carbonate, magnesium, lysine, arginine and ornithine). They vary in size from as small as a grain of sand to as large as a golf ball. A kidney stone develops when substances in urine form crystals that stick together and grow in size. In most cases, these crystals are removed from the body by the flow of urine, but they sometimes stick to the lining of the kidney or settle in places where the urine flow fails to carry them away. A kidney stone is the result of a chemical reaction that occurs when the urine becomes concentrated. A kidney stone is formed within the kidney or urinary tract.
