Signs and Symptoms of Measles

Alternative Name: Rubeola

Measles Menu

Measles is one of the most contagious viral diseases. One of the common symptom of measles is the development of an itchy rash consisting of small, reddish raised spots. Measles is an acute viral illness spread by infected respiratory droplets coming from the infected person's cough or sneeze.

Most people suffering from measles usually recover within 7-10 days, but in some serious cases it may take time to recover and it may even be fatal, so you should get your children immunised properly against measles with MMR vaccine.

The incubation period of measles (period of showing symptoms after causing infection), ranges from 10–12 days. From exposure to rash onset averages 14 days (range, 7–18 days).

Symptoms, after a ten-day incubation period, can include corzya, conjunctivitis, bronchitis, Koplik spots, rash and fever. Measles is a 'notifiable' disease, meaning that doctors are required by law to report suspected cases. A vaccine against measles exists and since 1988 has been administered as part of the combined MMR (measles, mumps and rubella) vaccine.

The most common initial symptoms of measles include:

  • Fever.
  • Coughing.
  • Runny Nose.
  • Red Eyes.
  • Sneezing.
  • Conjunctivitis.
  • Cold.
  • Skin Rashes.
