What are the Signs and Symptoms of Mumps?

Mumps Menu

The mumps virus enters your body through the nose and throat. Symptoms usually start as the virus multiplies and spreads to the brain and the membranes that cover it, glands (usually the salivary glands ), pancreas , testicles , ovaries , and other areas of the body.

Mumps is a disease which typically causes enlargement of one or more of the salivary glands. Usually, Both the left and right parotid glands get affected, with one side swelling a few days before the other, or only one side may swell. In some rare cases, mumps may also attack other salivary glands instead of the parotids. If this happens, swelling may be noticed under the tongue, under the jaw, or all the way down to the front of the chest - according to which salivary gland has been infected.

Some of the common symptoms of mumps are:

  • Headache.
  • Muscle aches.
  • Fever.
  • Fatigue .
  • Dry mouth.
  • Tiredness
  • Difficulty in swallowing.
  • Loss of appetite.
  • Earache.
  • Onset of parotitis (swollen and tender salivary glands under the ears-on one or both sides).
  • In some rare and severe cases mumps can even lead to hearing loss.
