Pleurisy or Pleuritis : An Introduction and Its Various Types
Introduction:Pleurisy is also known as Pleuritis or Pleurodynia. In Ayurveda it is known by the name of shool which means 'pain'. It is a serious disorder of the respiratory system. In this disorder the lungs are badly affected. The disease is so dangerous that the person can die from it. This disease is spreading at a very fast rate in today's environment. The disease is dangerous but not fatal, so it can be treated with the help of proper medication. It is a disorder in which the pleura which is a membrane and works like an envelope for the lungs is affected. This inflammation leads to pain in chest while inhaling or exhaling. The pleura wall has two coverings. The first covering is for the lungs and the second one is for the chest wall. In other words we can say that pleura membrane resides in the marginal gap between the lungs and the chest. The Pleura membrane is very smooth because of the fluid called pleural effusion in between the layers. The basic function of the pleura membrane is to protect the lungs. So when the pleura membrane coverings are rubbed against each other, no friction is produced but when inflammation occurs in this membrane, because of any reason, then friction is generated that causes pain when breathing. The increase in the level of pleural effusion fluid can also cause discomfort during the movement of chest and breathing. Types of PleurisyThree types of Pleurisy have been observed in the patients Dry Pleurisy: Dry Pleurisy tends to develop if fibrous deposition occurs in the pleura. This deposit can cause the inflammation of the lungs that can affect the functionality of the lungs very badly. Effusive Pleurisy: The coverings of the pleura membranes are separated by a fluid called pleural effusion. When the level of this fluid gets increased by normal level then discomfort in the chest occurs. Purulent Pleurisy: It is the most dangerous among all pleurisy types. In this type of pleurisy the gap between the pleura layers gets filled with pus. It can become life threatening for the sufferer.
