Pneumonia Causes

Pneumonia Menu

Pneumonia is mainly caused due to the infection of the lung tissue, which is caused by one of the many micro-organisms such as bacteria, viruses, fungi and many other parasites. Pneumonia can be easily caused by inhalation of some food or liquid containing germs responsible for pneumonia. It can be even caused by inhaling germ particles from air, which were thrown into air from an infected person's cough or sneeze.

It is often impossible to identify the correct culprit. The most common cause of pneumonia is a gram-positive bacteria known as Streptococcus pneumonia(S. pneumonia). The most common gram-negative bacteria causing pneumonia is Haemophilus influenzae (most common in patients with chronic lung disease, and people drinking lot of alcohol).

Pneumonia is a disease which can occur to any person and at any age. One myth which develops in many person's mind, that getting wet causes pneumonia, but let me tell you that there is nothing like that. But, if you are already suffering from cold or flu then it can make pneumonia more worse. This happens because the cold or flu will irritate the lungs, creating an environment where it is more easier for pneumonia germs to move in and start an infection.

Some factors which may increase the risk of developing pneumonia may be:

  • Bronchiectasis.
  • Excessive Smoking.
  • Chronic alcohol misuse,
  • Intravenous drug misuse,
  • Weakened immune system (through spleen removal, chemotherapy or AIDS for example).
  • Cystic Fibrosis.
  • Lung Cancer.
