Smallpox Causes - How is it Spread?
CausesSmallpox is a very serious disease and is highly contagious (spreads from person to person very easily). It is usually caused through contact with a person who has already developed characteristic skin lesions (pox) of the disease, although a person who has a less severe infection (not symptomatic or diagnosable in the usual way) can unwittingly spread the virus. Right now, there are no cases of smallpox disease in the United States. In fact, the last case of smallpox in the United States was in 1949, and the last case in the world was in 1977. Though, some samples of the virus that causes the disease are still kept in laboratories. How is Smallpox Spread? This disease is usually transmitted very easily from one person to other. It is spread through the infected tiny droplets coming from the infected persons cough, sneezes and talks. It can also be spread by touching the surfaces on which the infected droplets landed, or by directly touching infected person's nasal and throat secretions.
