What is smallpox?
Smallpox is an infection caused by a virus named variola. The name smallpox is derived from the Latin word for "spotted" and refers to the raised bumps that appear on the face and body of an infected person.
In past, smallpox used to be a very serious and a greatly feared disease. This disease has already done huge epidemics worldwide. In past almost every person used to suffer from this disease and there were many deaths too. But now as many vaccines have already been discovered, this disease is not a threat anymore. Smallpox is now thought to have been eliminated from the Earth. In 1980 WHO announced that the disease had been wiped out by a bold program of vaccination.
