Causes for Snoring

Snoring Menu

Snoring occurs when air does not flow smoothly through the air passages, or when the soft tissues or muscles in your air passages vibrate. As you fall into a deep sleep, the muscles in your tongue, throat and roof of your mouth relax. This muscle relaxation causes your throat tissues to sag. As you breathe, the sagging tissues narrow your airway and vibrate or flutter, creating the sound of snoring.

Some Important Causes of Snoring includes:

  • Heredity : The heredity problem in 60% cases, become the main cause of snoring.
  • Being overweight : Excess weight and fatty tissue in the neck cause the throat to become smaller. Overweight people are more prone to snoring.
  • Smoking is one activity that has been linked to aggravation of the snoring condition. Smoking is one of several factors that encourage the body to produce excess mucus, which can contribute to the restriction of the airways.
  • Alcohol is a well-known relaxant and which can cause a softening of the tissue in the throat, which will nearly always lead to a noticeable effect on a snorer.
  • Other factors that affect breathing such as non-allergic ailments like colds and flu can also have a restricting effect on the airways, although these are more difficult to deal with.
  • When you sleep on your back, your tongue falls backwards into your throat which can narrow your airway and partly block airflow.
  • Enlarged adenoids or tonsils cause obstruction and additional vibration during breathing.
  • A long soft-palate or uvula dangles and can cause fluttery noises during relaxed breathing.
  • Allergies, asthma, a cold, or sinus infections block nasal airways and make inhalation difficult. This creates a vacuum in the throat, and noisy breathing.
  • Age can be a factor. The older you get, the weaker your throat muscles become. Weak throat muscles cause the surrounding tissues to sag and vibrate.
  • Snoring is made worse by sleeping tablets.
  • Medications may cause dryness or minor irritation of the nasal passageways and increase the incidence of snoring.
  • Injuries to the nose that result in a deviation of the septum may result in snoring.
