Because symptoms of viral and bacterial tonsillitis usually overlap, it is very difficult to distinguish between them based on symptoms alone. Usually, if the patient has prominent cough and nasal symptoms - then we can say that there are more chances that the cause is viral. While on the other hand, when the tonsils swell and become coated and also there is a sore throat then the cause is usually bacterial caused by a streptococcus bacteria.
