Causes for Toothache

Toothache occurs from inflammation of the central portion of the tooth called pulp. The pulp contains nerve endings that are very sensitive to pain. Inflammation to the pulp or pulpitis may be caused by dental cavities , trauma, and infection. It's important for you to have a complete oral examination to determine the cause.

Common causes of Toothache are:

• Abscess may be a cause of toothache. A tooth abscess is a collection of pus resulting due to infection at the center of a tooth.
• Tooth infection
• Crack in the tooth
• A fracture of the tooth.
• Sugar and starch in foods are the substances that cause damage to teeth. The bacteria in the mouth feed on sugar and starch and produce an acid that can eat through the teeth, leading to tooth decay.

Other possible causes may be:

• Dental Cavities: The most common cause of a toothache is a dental cavity. Dental cavities are holes in the two outer layers of a tooth called the enamel and the dentin. The enamel is the outermost white hard surface and the dentin is the yellow layer just beneath the enamel.

• Gum Disease: The second most common cause of toothache is gum disease. Gum disease refers to inflammation of the soft tissue (gingiva) and abnormal loss of bone that surrounds the teeth and holds them in place. Gum disease is caused by toxins secreted by bacteria in "plaque" that accumulate over time along the gum line. This plaque is a mixture of food, saliva, and bacteria.

• Impaction & Eruption : Impacted (teeth pressing together) or erupting (tooth growing out or "cutting") molar teeth (the large teeth in the back of the jaw) can cause pain. As the molar teeth erupt, the nearby tissues can become inflamed and swollen.
