Causes for Tuberculosis (TB)

Tuberculosis Menu

  • Tuberculosis is mainly caused by Mycobacterium tuberculosis, which is a slow-growing bacteria that thrive in areas of the body that are rich in blood and oxygen. It's a Gram-positive, Rod-shaped, Non-motile, Acid-fast, Hydrophobic bacteria.
  • Other bacteria are also responsible for causing Tuberculosis. These includes: M. tuberculosis complex, M. bovis or M. africanum.
  • It is a contagious disease i. e. transmitted from person to person via droplets. When someone with TB infection coughs, sneezes, or talks, tiny droplets of saliva or mucus are expelled into the air, which could be inhaled by another person.
  • Once infectious particles reach the alveoli. Then the bacteria are transmitted to your lymph system and bloodstream and spread to other organs. The bacteria further multiply in organs that have high oxygen pressures, such as the upper lobes of your lungs, your kidneys, bone marrow, and meninges-the membrane like coverings of your brain and spinal cord.
  • Poverty, poor nutrition, crowded living conditions are also the main causes of tuberculosis.

Other Possible Causes of Tuberculosis includes:

  • HIV infection: If you have the HIV infection, then there are more chances to get affected by tuberculosis.
  • Low socioeconomic status, may also cause tuberculosis.
  • Alcoholism: Alcoholism may also lead to the tuberculosis condition.
  • Crowded living conditions
  • If you are suffering from diseases that weaken the immune system of your body, may cause tuberculosis.
