Causes of Urinary Tract Infection (UTI)

|
A UTI is caused by bacteria that can also live in the digestive tract, in the vagina, or around the urethra. Most often these bacteria enter the urethra and travel to the bladder and kidneys. Escherichia (E. coli ) causes about 80% of UTI's in adults. These bacteria are commonly present in the colon and may enter the urethral opening from the skin around the anus and genitals. Other bacteria cause urinary tract infections includes Staphylococcus saprophyticus, Chlamydia trachomatis.
Main causes of Urinary Tract Infections are:
- Kidney Stones : The presence of stones in the kidneys, mainly causes infections in urinary tract. These stones can fill the entire urinary collecting system in the kidney.
- Kidney Infection : A kidney infection is most commonly seen with a blocked urinary tract due to a malformation of the collecting system that does not allow the urine to drain naturally.
- Bladder Infection : This is the most common cause of UTI and occurs most frequently in women. Bacteria have much easier access to the bladder in women. The female urethra is very short in comparison to that of the man. The urethra of a women is only about 1 inch in length. The urethra is located at the top of the vagina.
- Chronic Cystitis Cystica : This is the condition where women have repeated episodes of UTI or Cystitis. When these repeat infections occur, there can be small little blisters, scars, or areas of weakened bladder mucosa that are much more susceptible to becoming infected.
- Waiting too long to pass urine. When urine stays in the bladder for a long time, more germs are made, and the worse a UTI can become.
- Diabetes, are also the main cause of urinary tract infections.
- A tumour in the urinary tract may also cause urinary tract infections.
- 'Foreign body' in the urinary tract: Urinary catheters, nephrostomy tubes and ureteric stents , all tend to increase the likelihood of infection.
