Urticaria (Hives) - Introduction
Definition:Hives (urticaria) is an allergic reaction in the skin characterized by white or pink welts or large bumps surrounded by redness. Urticaria or hives is a relatively common form of allergic reaction that is caused by direct contact with an allergenic substance, or an immune response to food or some other allergen. Hives can also be caused by stress. Urticaria is also known as nettle rash or uredo. Hives (also known as urticaria or angioedema) look like mosquito bites. Types of Urticaria:Acute Urticaria (Acute Hives): It last for six weeks or less. Acute urticaria is due to certain foods and additives, medications, and infections. Foods such as eggs, nuts and shellfish are common causes of Hives. Chronic Urticaria (Chronic Hives): It last more than six weeks. The cause of chronic hives cannot be identified despite detailed testing.
