Causes of Varicose Veins
The heart pumps blood filled with oxygen and nutrients to the whole body. Arteries carry blood from the heart towards the body parts. Veins carry oxygen-poor blood from the body back to the heart. The squeezing of leg muscles pumps blood back to the heart from the lower body. Veins have valves that act as one-way flaps. Varicose veins develop when the valves of the veins become damaged. This causes blood to pool in the veins, enlarging them and often making them visible beneath the skin.
There are four main factors that contribute to the development of varicose veins:
- Heredity: In 50% cases, heredity is responsible for the development of varicose veins.
- Sex: Mostly, female are more prone to get affected by this disease.
- Hormonal changes, as with puberty, pregnancy, or menopause causes the occurrence of varicose veins.
- Overweight may causes varicose veins.
Other Possible Causes may be:
- Wearing knee-high socks or stockings with tight elastic can cause varicose veins.
- Varicose veins occur when healthy vein walls become weak and swell.
- Prolonged standing may also cause varicose veins.
- The use of birth control pills may induce improper functions of veins, thus causing varicose veins.
- Post-menopausal hormonal replacement therapy, may lead to the condition of varicose veins.
- Prolonged sitting with legs crossed.
- Injury to the veins.
