Varicose Veins - Introduction
Definition:Varicose veins are veins on the leg which are large, twisted, and ropelike, and can cause pain, swelling, or itching. They are an extreme form of telangiectasia, or spider veins. . They can occur anywhere in the body but are particularly common in the pelvis and legs. The valves of the varicose veins become damaged, thus causing the veins to remain filled with blood, especially when you are standing. Varicose veins are one of the most common problems of blood vessels. Most people with varicose veins are between ages 30 and 60. Varicose veins most frequently affect women. Varicose veins are abnormally and irregularly swollen veins that are often associated with symptoms such as tired, heavy, or aching limbs. In severe cases, varicose veins can rupture , or open sores (varicose ulcers) can form on the skin. The most common form of varicose veins progresses downward in either or both of two large veins near the surface of the leg.
