Whooping Cough Symptoms

Medical Name: Pertussis

Whooping Cough Menu

What are the symptoms of Pertussis?

Whopping cough normally starts with cold and mild cough. After that it is followed by episodes of severe coughing that can last for up to 1-2 months. In the severe episodes of coughing there may be consecutive 10-15 coughs at a time without any breath. The cough is usually associated with a whooping noise during breathing in between coughs. The child may even vomit during the severe episodes of vomiting.

The person may eventually cough up some phlegm and these attacks may be followed by vomiting. The child's temperature is likely to remain normal.

Healthy adults who become infected with whooping cough usually suffer from a very mild form of the disease as compared to children. However, adults over 60 years age are at more risk of having severe symptoms and developing complications. The acuteness of their symptoms is reduced if the person is properly given vaccine and was also given a booster vaccine, as the protection against whooping cough provided by the vaccine wears off over time.

Some other symptoms of whooping cough may be:

  • Mild fever - or no fever at all in early stages
  • Running nose.
  • Sore throat.
  • Mild dry cough.
  • Sneezing.
  • Tears.
  • Tiredness.
  • Loss of appetite.
  • Night cough.
  • Vomiting.
  • Retching.
  • Nosebleeds.
  • Diarrhea.
